Also known as マダオ Madao, short for まるでダメなオッさん marude damena ossan, literally meaning "totally hopeless middle-aged man", Hasegawa Taizou is a 38 year old man who is almost always looked down upon by the other characters in the series, though he used to be a fairly high-ranking Bakufu officer previously.

His existence is almost entirely defined by the pair of sunglasses. According to the "Spouzer" Kamenashi had, when Hasegawa puts on Kamenashi's sunglasses, his fighting powers are over 600k. (k is for konbu, meaning kelp), but once the glasses are removed, his powers dropped to 1k in Episode 117. Currently estranged from wife Hasegawa Hatsu 長谷川 ハツ because of his jobless lifestyle.

Hasegawa works as a freelancer, though during the most part of the series, he is a homeless vagabond.

The odd jobs he has undertaken so far are:

  1. Stall holder at a shooting gallery at the carnival in Episode 17
  2. Janitor at the Hashida Corporation in Episode 51
  3. Sushi-shop employee in Episode ?
  4. Konbini employee in Episode ?
  5. taxi-driver in Episode ?, during which Okita Sougo got in and asked him to knock down Hijikata Toushirou.

Please describe his external appearance.

Background Story

Hasegawa Taizou 長谷川 泰三 used to be the Bakufu's Head of Immigration Department, assigned with a special duty to protect Amanto Prince Hata. However, instead of protecting, he punched the Prince instead, thereby failing his duty, and was ordered by his superiors to undergo 切腹 seppuku. After the incident with Prince Hata ハタ皇子 in the first volume of the manga, he was ordered by higher-ups to commit seppukku. Hasegawa however, chose to escape and ran away from his job, causing more shame to his family. He has been unable to hold down a steady job ever since, Hatsu left him from there onwards due to his lack of a permanent job and lifelihood stability. Hasegawa has been trying to get back together with his wife ever since, from trying hard to secure a job, to finding more permanent accommodation and even trying to send her cakes and gifts on her birthdays.

Born into a family of lowly samurais, despite objections because of difference in social status, he married Hatsu, and so married into her family, adopting her family name Hasegawa in the process. Taizou was given a job by Hasegawa family and worked his way to became the head of Immigration Bureau.

Hasegawa's nickname in the Japanese manga is Madao. In English translation made by VIZ, it's changed into DORK (Dumb Old Retarded Kook) [2]
