Synopsis (extracted from TV Tokyo):

During a regular meeting, 10th Division Captain Harada Unosuke and other Shinsengumi troop members demanded to know from Vice Comamander Hijikata Toushirou whether it is true that their Commander Kondou Isao has been dumped by a woman, and on top of it all, lost in a sword duel to some unknown samurai. Another member asked how is it possible that he could have lost a fight, though they know it is common for him to be dumped. A third asked who exactly is this silver-haired samurai? Hijikata asked in return how could someone as skilful as Kondou-san have lost, and who has been spreading rumours? All the members pointed to Okita Sougo, saying he went round broadcasting it on an amplifier. Okita Sougo then 'clarified' that he in turn heard it from Hijikata-san. Hijikata groaned inwardly for being so stupid as to tell that fellow. The troops, shocked to find out that it is true, started gossiping among themselves, until Hijikata snapped in anger, kicking the table over at the same time. Saying that talking during meeting is a crime punishable by seppukku, Hijikata decided to start with Yamazaki's head, in spite of Yamazaki's protestation that he didn't say anything. In the midst of all this ruckus, Kondou turned up, with a grossly swollen left face ...

There after, Hijikata, knowing that the troops will still set forth regardless, gave them permission to seek out the 'silver-haired samurai' to avenge Kondou's dignity. Silently, he chastised them for being so clueless as to think they can defeat someone whom Kondou lost to. The troops then set forth.

Scene changed to Yorozuya's office, where the 3 Yorozuya chaps are squaring off against one another in a contest of scissors-paper-rock. Because the consultant-carpenter customer who came to enlist their services, required only 1 person, no one in the trio wanted to go and decided to slug it out by arguing and fighting to see who can avoid working. In the end they had to go for scissors-paper-rock to decide. Due to Gintoki and Kagura cheating, Shinpachi eventually lost. The 3 started arguing again. The customer with an unbelievably long name of Ishida Pie-ru Genpachizaemon 石田・ピエール・源八左右衛門, fed up with the trio, declared Gintoki to be the 'winner' and that he should be the one to work for him, and dragged Gintoki away.

The scene switched back to show Shinsengumi members tearing down the streets of Edo, putting up notices all over the place, challenging the 'silver-haired samurai' to show his face. They searched a number of premises and found among them:

  • 銀舎利 ginshari samurai,
  • 散髪 sanpatsu samurai,

but no 銀髪 ginpatsu (silver-haired) samurai. 1st Division Captain Okita Sougo reported their total indiscretion to Hijikata, and the furious Vice Commander set off together with Okita Sougo intending to solve the problem himself once and for all before Kondou and Shinsengumi's dignity are totally lost. Since Hijikata intended to 'cut down' the silver-haired samurai, Okita Sougo then suggested using any silver-haired chap to substitute to pacify the troops, and presented Musashi as a possibility. Needless to say, Hijikata rejected the idea outright.

While the duo continued to scour the streets taking down the notices and keeping a lookout for the 'silver-haired' samurai, Yamazaki called to report a potential lead, only to discover: かつかつ katsu katsu samurai, and Yamazaki was of course, beaten up by the demonic Vice Commander. Meanwhile Gintoki had climbed up onto the roof with his employer to repair the roof, grumbling and calling his client 'baldy'.

With no other leads other than 'silver-haired', Okita Sougo suggested giving up, saying the 'Ladies4' is about to start, though as Hijikata pointed out, Okita Sougo probably felt uneasy too about the whole incident. Hijikata then recounted how Kondou brought all of them lowly country-side samurais to such a respected position in the Shinsengumi, only to turn around and find Okita Sougo playing with a stray puppy and not listening to him at all. Just then, a voice casually called out 'Hey, bro, watch out!' and a bunch of wooden boards fell from the roof, nearly crushing Hijikata. Gintoki then climbed down, and Hijikata recognised him from the Ikeda-ya Incident (Episode 5). Gintoki however could not remember him at all and mistook him for 'Oogushi-kun'. Believing him to be the 'silver-haired' samurai who defeated Kondou, Hijikata asked for Okita Sougo's katana, climbed up the roof and challenged Gintoki to a fight. Gintoki finally realized that the 'gorilla' Kondou is related to them, aka Shinsengumi, but Hijikata after throwing him Okita Sougo's katana, cut him short, saying that a 'gorilla' he may be, but Kondou is their important leader and battle comrade, and that he would never allow anything to dishonor him or Shinsengumi. Thus the only way to avenge that indignity is by swords. And the fight begins. Though Hijikata kept hacking away at Gintoki, Gintoki refused to draw his sword. In the end, when Hijikata managed to land a slash on Gintoki's left shoulder, Gintoki finally drew his sword. In one stroke, Gintoki broke Hijikata's blade and ended the fight.

As Gintoki prepared to go to the hospital, Hijikata asked whether Gintoki spared his life because he pitied him. Gintoki however, replied that fighting is all about protecting something, just like Hijikata, who was trying to protect Shinsengumi's honour. Hijikata then asked what is Gintoki protecting then. Gintoki replied he is only protecting his own 'rules', and left.

Unbeknown to Hijikata, both Kondou and Okita Sougo were watching the roof-top fight from another building. Okita Sougo's interest was piqued and wanted to challenge Gintoki himself. Kondou however, advised him against it, saying that not even Okita Sougo might be a match for Gintoki, and that this fellow has already transcended the boundary of winning and losing. The episode ended with Hijikata saying,'Sorry, Kondou-san, I lost too'.

Ginpachi Sensei - Query from Oonishi-san: verify: check translation

  • Q: "I find something very strange, I remember Shinpachi saying it before. Joui war started when the Amantos came to Earth 20 years ago. Then Gin-san and Katsura-san must be in their 30s?"
  • A: "Listen up because this will come out in the test. Joui war is not a 1-year affair. When Joui resistance started 20 years, Gin-san is still a hairless babe. The Amantos forced the Bakufu government into submission, the warriors gather to resist but were all defeated. At this point Gin-san started growing hair. As Amantos extended their reach deeper into the Bakufu, Gin-san started fighting them. This 10-over years period is the so-called Joui war period. Gin-san and his comrades took part only in the latter part of the war. So, Oonishi, go stand in the corridor."

The phrase is likely to have originated from a Meiji Govt decree 散髪脱刀令(さんぱつだっとうれい) sanpatsu dattou rei, announcing that itizens are free to choose whether they wish to remove their chonmage 丁髷, in the same year as the ban on katanas being carried by commoners
  • かつかつ katsu katsu, literally poverty-stricken, barely scraping by
  • Musashi - most likely referring to 宮本 武蔵 みやもと むさし Miyamoto Musashi, early Edo samurai and artist, reputed for his sword skills. Legend has it that he never bathed so as not to be attacked by his enemies.
